First-party cookie

Meaning

A first-party cookie is a cookie whose site matches the site shown in the browser's address bar. First-party cookies carry most of the everyday state of the web, such as logins, baskets, language choices and anti-forgery tokens, and they are rarely blocked by default. The label describes a relationship, not a cookie type: the same cookie from a video site is first-party when you visit that site directly and third-party when its player is embedded in another page. Consent or notice may still apply in some regions. See also: Third-party cookie, SameSite, the guide "First-Party, Third-Party and Partitioned Cookies".
